Although psychiatrists of Indian origin were playing a vital role in clinical and academic psychiatry in U.K. until the mid-1990s, there was no professional body to provide a platform for mutual support, encouragement and share clinical expertise and experience.
In 1995, the idea to form British Indian Psychiatric Association (BIPA) arose following a visit to attend American Psychiatric Association (APA) Conference in U.S.A. group of psychiatrists notably, Dr. Babulal Chaprala (All Saints Hospital, Birmingham) and Dr. Harish Gadhvi (Claybury Hospital, London). They were inspired by how psychiatrists of Indian origin had organized themselves in the U.S. and formed Indian American Psychiatric Association under the auspices of APA.
